The Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which undertakes applied research to private and public enterprise and consists of about 60 institutes in Germany at 40 different locations with 20,000 employees. The IVI in Dresden employs more than 80 research fellows in four departments and two research groups in cooperation with TU Dresden and TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

The institute is operating in a wide array of transport-related research and development topics, ranging from the fields of electromobility, traffic planning and traffic ecology, traffic information, vehicle propulsion and sensor technologies, but while also incorporating traffic telematics, the information and communication sectors, as well as disposition and logistics. Fraunhofer IVI’s facilities and large equipment include high-performance laboratories, innovative test platforms and vehicles as well as modern hardware and software.

The group for disposition and strategic optimisation mainly focuses on systems design and implementation for strategic and operative planning software as well as software systems for hazard prevention and crisis management. Inside this area they have gained rich competences on GIS-based state-of-the-art decision making and user-friendly desktop, web and mobile applications for operational staff. Additionally IT-based scenario analyses are often carried out.
